Description

🌿 Alocasia ‘Nairobi Nights’ Care Sheet

Light:

  • Prefers bright, indirect light.

  • Can tolerate medium light, but leaves develop best color and size in bright, filtered light.

  • Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the dark, glossy leaves.

Watering:

  • Water when the top 3–5cm of soil is dry.

  • Keep soil lightly moist, never waterlogged.

  • Reduce watering slightly in winter or during dormancy.

Humidity:

  • Thrives in high humidity (60–80%).

  • Ideal for bathrooms, terrariums, or use with a humidifier.

  • Low humidity can cause leaf edges to brown.

Temperature:

  • Ideal range: 18–28°C.

  • Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect from drafts.

Soil:

  • Use a well-draining, airy aroid mix (potting soil, perlite, orchid bark, coco peat).

  • Ensures healthy roots and prevents waterlogging.

Fertilizing:

  • Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer.

  • Pause fertilization in autumn and winter.

Pruning & Maintenance:

  • Remove yellow or damaged leaves at the base.

  • Wipe leaves with a damp cloth to maintain their glossy appearance.

Repotting:

  • Repot every 1–2 years or when rootbound.

  • Best done in spring, using a slightly larger pot.

Dormancy:

  • May enter semi-dormancy in cooler months.

  • Slower growth or temporary leaf loss is normal; resume care as temperatures rise.

Common Problems:

  • Yellow leaves → overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Brown tips → low humidity or inconsistent watering.

  • Pests → spider mites, mealybugs, thrips.
